San Diego: Best Food in the City by Category

San Diego is not short of things to do. It is the perfect spot for the ultimate vacation and you can even find lots of unordinary things to do. But beach and sunsets are not the only thing good about this town. San Diegans have high expectations for their food. No matter what you’re in the mood food, we’ve got a great spot for that! Read ahead for the best food in San Diego broken down by category.

Breakfast and Brunch

French Toast Sampler at Fig Tree Cafe is a must!

Snooze – Originally from Denver, Colorado, this breakfast spot features a delicious breakfast menu. Come early as the wait can be long (though totally worth it). I strongly recommend the Eggs Benedict!

Tom Ham’s Lighthouse – The view of the bay and the San Diego skyline is spectacular. Lunch and dinner are great but their Sunday brunch buffet is one of the best in the city. Raw seafood bar, made-to-order omelet station and much more. This is the spot I take all my out of town guests!

Fig Tree Cafe – several locations in town, we love going to the Pacific Beach spot and then strolling through the beach to walk off the delicious French Toast and mimosas!

Donut Bar – this could fall in the dessert category but technically, donuts are breakfast. They’ve been featured as the best donuts on USA Today, Thrillist, MSN and more – and with reason. The long wait out the door is absolutely worth it. Come early because they’re open until they sell out!

Mexican

Always a lively atmosphere at Casa de Reyes

Casa de Reyes – located in Old Town, this is a great spot for strong margaritas, live music and lots of fun. Open air dining with plenty of shade!

Lucha Libre – delicious tacos at great prices and fun vibe. Everything on the menu is so tasty and the salsa bar is the perfect touch.

Pizza

Great pizza is only made better with great drinks at BASIC

Basic – the best pizza in town, hands down. Their sister restaurant, URBN, is just as good!

Napizza – a great spot for a quick bite or delivery pizza that’s healthy and local. They allow their dough to rise slowly with minimal use of yeast. Basically, easier to digest and tastier to eat!

Burgers

Burger and Beer – the perfect combo at Hodad’s

Slater 50/50 – this small California chain restaurant is the perfect spot for lovers of burgers, bacon and craft beer! 50/50 is their signature burger patty made with 50% ground bacon and 50% ground beef. And the fries are some of the best (get half regular, half sweet potato!)

Hodad’s – dishing out burgers in San Diego since 1969. This joint features awesome burgers and milkshakes topped with a full scoop of ice cream.

Tacos

Love the blue corn tortillas at Puesto

Puesto – tasty tacos and a super fun vibe, this is a great spot for Taco Tuesday!

La Puerta – tacos, tunes and tequila. Need I say more?

Italian

Civico 1845 is such a cute little Italian spot

Civico 1845 – one of the newest spots in Little Italy, you can expect traditional Italian food with traditional Italian servers! They also have a great vegan-friendly menu!

Cucina Urbana – great vibe and great food, everything on the menu is good!

Catania – great spot for date night or a girls night. The service is as good as the food!

Ramen

Blow torched under belly pork at RakiRaki

RakiRaki– always on the top of the Best Restaurant list, the ramen here is the best. There’s always a wait and they don’t take reservations but you’ll be glad you waited! Be sure to try their frozen beer!

Under Belly – a fun, hipster spot with two awesome locations and tasty ramen and local craft beer.

French

Delicious Brussel sprouts at Bo Beau

Bo Beau – Boasting French comfort cuisine, they are famous for their Brussel sprouts but everything is tasty.

Au Revoir – in the heart of Hillcrest neighborhood, the food and the wine are a-plenty!

Fish Tacos

Delicious fish tacos at Oscar’s

Oscar’s Mexican Seafood – several locations in the city, one of the best ceviche and fish taco spots in San Diego!

Pacific Beach Fish Shop – great tacos in Pacific Beach, this place is always packed but not overcrowded.

Seafood

Best Lobster roll at Ironside

Ironside Fish & Oyster Bar – great spot in Little Italy with a super fun atmosphere! Their lobster roll is out of this world!

Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill – quick, fresh seafood spot. They only do seafood and they do it well.

Point Loma Seafood – fresh seafood right on the water. Come during sunset for a nice, casual dinner with a view.

Sushi

Delicious sushi at Harney Sushi

Sushi Diner – if you’re a fan of Bob Marley and delicious sushi, this is the spot to go. A small little unassuming spot with delicious rolls.

Sushi Ota – tucked in a corner behind a 7-Eleven, you would never expect much from this spot. The award-winning, locally sourced sushi here is as good as it gets. Probably the best sushi you’ll ever have – be sure to make a reservation.

Bang Bang Sushi – perfect for a fun night out, this spot is 21 and up after 8pm. Night club meets sushi bar, don’t miss the ladies’ bathroom!

Harney Sushi – located in Old Town, this sushi spot features tasty rolls such as Me So Harney and a great variety of sake.

Dessert

The desserts at Extraordinary Desserts are almost too pretty to eat… almost!

Extraordinary Desserts – desserts as beautiful as they are delicious, most are decorated with fresh flowers. So much attention to detail, this place has been featured in the Food Network and is a perfect way to end the night (or to get it started, you pick!)

Uncle Biff’s Killer Cookies – I’m not sure how they do it but each bite is better than the one before. The best cookies you’ll ever try. Good luck eating just one!

San Diego Breweries

Stone Brewery – the location in Liberty Mutual is so fun. Sit outside and order some appetizers!

Ballast Point – located in Little Italy, this is the perfect spot to Sunday Funday!
