7 Simple Ways to Stay Fit While Traveling

I’ll be the first to admit that it can be a challenge to stayi fit while traveling! Each time we visit somewhere new, we love emerging in the culture. And our favorite way to do this is by tasting local delicacies and regional foods. But often times, they aren’t the healthiest. But all bets don’t have to be off. Read along for tips to staying fit while traveling.

Incorporate Exercise into Daily Activities

There are many ways to explore a new place. Opt for walking instead of driving or catching a taxi. Better yet, rent a bicycle for a faster way to move around. Many major cities have incorporated bike rentals throughout the main parts of the city that make renting and returning a bicycle fast and easy. For a great way to catch panoramic views, go on a hike. If you are near a body of water, kayaking, paddle boarding or surf lessons are a great way to enjoy the water while staying active. Better yet, go dancing!

Make Time for Exercise

If your vacation travel involves more relaxing, then make some time for a work out. If your hotel has a gym, wake up a bit early to get a quick workout in.  Or find a nearby yoga class to attend or better yet, an outdoor yoga. (Meetup is a great site for finding events. I also love ClassPass; the membership gives you access to studios in many different cities. If you are visiting a coastal town, go for a jog or a walk on the beach. Of course you can always workout in your hotel room! Below is a great example of an easy bodyweight workout you can do in your hotel. Do each rep for 45 seconds with 10 seconds rest and repeat the set three times:

Burpees
Mountain Climbers
Planks
Jump squats
Push-ups
Tricep Dips

Be Selective About Meals

Your healthy diet doesn’t have to go completely out the window during vacations. It’s totally okay to indulge but it’s all about balance. When choosing your meals, remember the fundamentals. Load up on veggies, lean proteins and complex carbs! And watch your portions. Just because you want to try the not-so-healthy treats, doesn’t mean they have to make up your entire meal. And if you do have an unhealthy meal, make up for it by making your next meal healthier!

Don’t Skip Meals

Getting too hungry is a good way to overeat. Start with a hearty and healthy breakfast. This is a good way to get your metabolism going and to give you energy for a day of exploring and sightseeing! Try to pack healthy snacks to hold you off between meals. Fruit and protein bars are easy to pack.

Stay Hydrated

Water is important for so many reasons. And often times we can confuse hunger for thirst so it is easy to overeat when you are thirsty. Try to pack a water bottle and fill it up often!

Don’t Drink Your Calories

Alcoholic beverages can be deceiving in more ways than one. Mixed drinks like Piña Coladas and Mojitos have lots of sugar and the calories can quickly add up. Liquor with club soda (and lime for flavor), wine or light beer might be your safest bets.

Share Dessert

You can indulge. After all, it’s a vacation! But sharing is caring! You’d be surprised how satisfying three bites of anything can be!

There you have it! It truly is all about balance. Indulging is ok especially if you stay active and hydrated. Do you have any great tips for staying fit while traveling? I’d love to hear them! Safe and fit travels!

Cheers!
