The Best Spots to Visit in Santa Fe, NM

Take your first step  in Santa Fe and you’ll likely have to slow it down. The pace is slower here, much slower. The rush that the rest of America seems to be on just skipped right over “The City Different.” Restaurants and shops open later and close earlier and you can totally forget about doing business on Sundays. Santa Fe is a town that makes its own rules. The oldest state capital in the US, its history is rooted in Spanish, Native American and Mexican cultures combined. Authentic cuisine, outstanding art and outdoor splendor await you in Santa Fe. Keep reading to learn the best spots to see and why this artsy town is a must-visit.

Visit Santa Fe

Walking through its adobe neighborhoods, or around the busy Plaza, there’s no denying that Santa Fe has a timeless, earthy soul. There’s not many other places where you can buy turquoise and silver directly from Native American jewelers or tour the oldest buildings in America.

The Oldest House

The De Vargas Street House (aka the oldest house in the US), was built in 1646.  Inside you’ll find artifacts and a cute souvenir shop. It sits on the part of the foundation of an ancient Indian Pueblo dating back to around 1200 AD.

San Miguel Mission

Right across from the oldest house is the oldest church. San Miguel Chapel also dates back to the early 1600’s and has been destroyed and rebuilt several times since.

Plaza

The plaza is the heart of Santa Fe. This tree-lined city square has always served as a gathering place. There are events  year-round and there’s plenty of historic monuments, restaurants, businesses and art galleries.

Loretto Chapel

This former Roman Catholic Church is now a museum and wedding chapel. And it’s made famous by its miraculous spiral staircase. Built by a mysterious stranger, it has been called a remarkable feat of woodworking as it has no central pole for support.

Art & Galleries

Indeed, its art and galleries are one of the principal attractions. The entire town is artsy, colorful, exuberant and boasts a long list of museums and a full calendar of art exhibits and festivals. Its eclectic array of artists working in many genres make Santa Fe one of the largest and most important art markets in the country. In fact, it is the third largest art market in the US (behind NY and LA). Though there are more museums and galleries here than you could possibly see in just one visit, so here are a few favorites.

Georgia O’Keeffe Museum

Dedicated to the life and artistic legacy of American icon, Georgia O’Keeffe. Recognized as the Mother of American Modernism, the museum bridges the different periods in her creative life. This is a great exhibit that gives a closer look into Georgia O’Keefe’s life and the evolution of her art.

Canyon Road

This mile-long road is home to more than a hundred art galleries and studios. Featuring emerging and well-known artists. Everything from contemporary, abstract, modern and everything in between, you can find it in this street. And it is an absolute must-see during your visit!

Meow Wolf

Meow Wolf bills itself as an immersive art experience. But really it is part amusement park and part art. It is housed in an old bowling alley and it’s the perfect place for kids and kids-at-heart. A truly unique experience and another must-see!

Outdoor Adventure

In Santa Fe, the summers are warm, the winters are freezing and snowy, and it is mostly clear year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 18°F to 83°F.  And at over 7,200 ft above sea level, Santa Fe is also the nation’s highest state capital. Sitting at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, its a fantastic base for hiking, mountain biking, and skiing. And you’re almost always guaranteed sun-drenched vistas, wide-open spaces and jaw-dropping views of New Mexico.

Kasha Katuwe

Also know as the Tent Rocks, the Kasha Katuwe is a majestic National Monument, which is best known for its scenic cone shaped formations. Trails will lead you through narrow and winding slot canyons and overlooking the tent rocks below. Go early to avoid the crowds!

Eat Local

When you come off the trails, you can indulge in chile-smothered local cuisine or healthy bites. Below are must-try’s.

Vinaigrette is a healthy, organic and innovative bistro serving up nutritious comfort foods. One of our favorite spots in Santa Fe.

The Teahouse, located on Canyon Road, is known for their international teas. But their food menu is not to be left behind. This cute outdoor cafe was another favorite! I loved the Lavender Honey Latte.

La Choza and The Shed are the ultimate spots for authentic New Mexico cuisine. These sister restaurants are local favorites and if you want to get really authentic, order the Chile Rellenos or the Chicken Enchiladas with Christmas Chile.

Kakawa Chocolates is not just a chocolate house. This is the spot for tasty chocolate elixirs. They combine traditional with cutting-edge, specializing in Chili Chocolate!

Dinner in a Teepee is a fun way to end (or start) the night. Hotel Santa Fe Hacienda and Spa offers an exclusive opportunity to have dinner in a teepee! Amaya Restaurant offers this opportunity by reservation only and makes for a fun, unforgettable experience.

Modern General is a minimalist’s dream. A self-proclaimed “tool shop” everything is functional, free of harmful chemicals, fabricated humanely and responsibly, including their food. This pretty general store is perfect for lunch or a cup of coffee.

Shop Local

Palace of the Governors

Located on the back wall of New Mexico History Museum, this is the place where local artisans display their wares daily. If you’re looking to buy turquoise or silver, you must visit. Prices are fair and quality is excellent.

Farmers Market

The farmers market runs Tuesdays and Saturday mornings and you won’t want to miss it. This is no small market and you an find everything from fresh produce, pottery, jewelry and more! The market runs alongside the railroad in the Railyard District and includes an indoor market. Plus, during the summer months, there is a Wednesday  Evening market too!

Santa Fe Vintage Outpost features beautifully curated handcrafted jewelry and carefully selected vintage apparel and jewelry from the Southwest. The showroom features a wider selection and is by-appointment only.
