How to Spend The Perfect Weekend in Lake Tahoe

If Lake Tahoe has been on your bucket list, it’s time check it off your list. This two-state city offers something for everyone – from outdoor activities to world-class spas and everything in between. And though most people assume Tahoe is a winter town, summer is full of outdoor activities such as hiking, water activities and much more. The fresh, clean air and gorgeous glistening water are reasons enough to visit but read along for ways to spend the perfect weekend in Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe is actually located right on the border of Nevada and California and is usually divided up between South Lake Tahoe and North Lake Tahoe. Both are equally beautiful yet so different so I recommend spending time in both North and South Lake Tahoe! The South Shore is generally bit more lively and offers more of a party scene and the more serene atmosphere is in the North Shore.

South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe’s outdoor recreation and vibrant nightlife attract people from all over the world and, located partially in Nevada, it’s home to many slot machines in the casinos. Considered the entertainment capital of Lake Tahoe, the area hosts lots of events, festivals and concerts year-round.

Visit Emerald Bay

Emerald Bay State Park includes the Emerald Bay overlook and hiking trails that go down to the small castle, Vikingsholm, and Fannette Island, the only island in Lake Tahoe.

Vikingsholm Trailhead

Walk the Eagle Falls Trail

One of our favorite things to do. The trail to this fall is very picturesque and kid-friendly! Man-made stairs make it a fun and easy hike.

Shop and Dine at Heavenly Village

A great place for shopping, dining and live entertainment, Heavenly Village is a great place to spend the afternoon. We loved Base Camp Pizza! For a great view of the city, the Heavenly Mountain Gondola is a 2.4 mile ride up above Lake Tahoe.

North Lake Tahoe

North Lake Tahoe consists of 12 resorts and towns and features everything from world-famous ski resorts and bed and breakfasts to gorgeous back country hiking trails. Definitely a quieter scene compared to its southern counterpart but still great fun.

Play in Northstar Village

Northstar Village is a quaint village in North Lake Tahoe that has shops, restaurants and an ice skating rink. During winter, they treat visitors to daily s’mores by the fire pit at 3:30pm.

Ride the Highlands Gondola

For a great view and a visit to the Ritz-Carlton, take the ride up the Highlands Gondola located in Northstar. It doesn’t reach the height of some other gondolas but its a nice view and you pass through some beautiful real estate. And the best part is it’s totally free!

Explore Incline Village

Incline Village is a paradise for adventurers, offering exhilarating activities the whole year. The surrounding Sierra Nevada draws skiers and snowboarders to Diamond Peak in the winter and offers challenging hikes in the summer months.

Bike the Flume Trail

You don’t need to be an avid cyclist to do this trail but be prepared for a workout! You can rent bikes from Flume Trail Bikes in Incline Village and take the moderate ride up to Marlette Lake. The view is absolutely worth the effort.

Ski Like an Olympian at Squaw Valley

Home of the 1960 Winter Olympics, this village has lots of fun activities. The gondola, shops, restaurants  or warm up by the fire pit! You could of course partake in snow activities in the same spot Olympians did in 1960!

Visit Truckee

This cute little town is a great place for lunch (our favorite was Burger Me), home-made fudge and shopping! There are some super cute boutiques and shops and it’s very dog friendly.

There you have it! The best ways to spend a weekend in Tahoe! Are you planning a trip to Tahoe? I’d love to hear what you’re most excited to see and do! Let me know!
